A Mt. Juliet Saturday: Touch-A-Truck, Chili Cook-Off, Prince Tribute
Saturday, Oct. 17, is one of those days when Mt. Juliet's calendar stops being a list and turns into a route. Between a mid-morning parking-lot gathering at Mt. Juliet High School and a late-evening tribute show, the day has at least a dozen things competing for your attention, most of them small, local and built around a cause. Here is how the day lines up, hour by hour, using the times the organizers have posted.
Morning: trucks, biscuits and a walk
The early shift belongs to families. At Sweet Biscuit, a “Falling for Biscuits” pop-up runs from 9 a.m. to noon. From 10 a.m. to noon, West Wilson Middle School hosts a Touch-A-Truck, the kind of event where children are allowed, even encouraged, to climb into the driver's seat of vehicles they usually only see from the car window.
Across town, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., the Mt. Juliet High School parking lot is the site of “Distracted Driving Is Scary,” an awareness walk and family event. The message is the one every parent of a new driver already knows, but a walk with neighbors tends to land harder than a reminder on a phone screen. Check with the organizers before you go, since the posted listing is brief.
Midday: chili for a cause
From noon to 2 p.m., MJ Wine & Spirits holds its first annual Chili Cook-Off for a Cause. A first-year event is a gamble, and the fun of it is that nobody yet knows which neighborhood cook will take the crown. The same two hours, noon to 2, also bring a free Front Porch Community Craft Event at The Village Forager, which is a good pairing if you need something quieter than a chili crowd.
If your plans lean to the autumn-market side, the Mt. Juliet Animal Care and Control shelter runs its Fall Yard Sale on Friday and Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon, so there is something for early risers on both days. For more on the city's own fall schedule, see our Mt. Juliet fall family lineup, and when the chili runs out and you want a sit-down lunch, our guide to where to eat in Mt. Juliet has you covered.
Afternoon into evening: a fundraiser dinner and a purple finish
From 5 to 8 p.m., the shelter is also the beneficiary of a community fundraiser night with Chick-fil-A: order through the restaurant's app, and part of the proceeds goes to shelter animals. That is a simple way to feed a family and do some good in the same transaction.
Then comes the late show. From 7 to 9 p.m. at Caribbean Vibes Venue, a live Prince tribute called Purple Evolution takes the stage. Tribute acts live or die on the details of the sound, and Prince's catalog, with its funk, its guitar work and its falsetto, is a demanding one. It is a lively way to close a day that began with a school bus and a pop-up biscuit counter.
A few practical notes
Everything above comes from posted event listings for the week of Oct. 14 to 18, and listings change. Admission is free only where noted, which in this list means the craft event; ask the organizers about cost, parking and weather plans before you head out. Local theater is also on: Wilson Central High School stages Little Shop of Horrors from Oct. 15 to 18, with the 7 p.m. curtain listed.
