10+ Family Things Around Mt. Juliet This Week (Aug. 20–26)
This is the big week. The Wilson County–Tennessee State Fair is in its final stretch at the James E. Ward Agricultural Center in Lebanon, and for a Mt. Juliet family that is about a fifteen-minute drive to the single largest concentration of things-to-do we get all year.
Everything below runs Thursday through Wednesday.
1. The Wilson County–Tennessee State Fair, through Saturday
Ten days of carnival rides, livestock shows, agricultural exhibits, live music across several stages and competitions for every age. Gate hours are 4 to 9 p.m. Thursday, 4 to 10 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday. The best practical tip: a free satellite shuttle runs from 3 p.m. daily. Park off site, ride in, skip the lot entirely — with small kids this is the difference between a good night and a meltdown. Fair details and hours.
2. Fair Kids Night, Thursday Aug. 20
Thursday is built around the children. Kids Night Events start at 6:30 p.m., with the Doll Parade, the Four Wheeler Rodeo and a Spelling Bee earlier in the evening, and the Cattle Capers Dairy Show at 7. Gates 4 to 9 p.m. Thursday's schedule.
3. Fair Monster Trucks & Fair Princess Revue, Friday Aug. 21
Monster truck rides start when the gates open at 4 p.m. and the Monster Truck Show runs at 6:30, with the Fair Princess Revue on either side of it. Bring ear protection for the small ones — the show is genuinely loud, which is of course the entire point. Friday's schedule.
4. Fair Final Saturday, Aug. 22
The best day of the run and the last one. Special Needs Day opens at 9 a.m., School Day Events at 9:30, and then a 10 a.m. block with the Brick Olympics and a LEGO League Robotics Challenge. Also on the day: the Baby Show at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., clogging and origami demonstrations, corn hole and horseshoe pitching, an ice cream freeze-off at 2, square dancing at 5 and a second monster truck show at 6:30. 5. Story Time at Breeden's Orchard, Friday Aug. 21
Ten to eleven in the morning on Beckwith Road: a few read-aloud stories outdoors, fresh air, and unstructured play in a setting where nobody minds if a toddler wanders off mid-sentence. Pair it with a stop at the market on the way out. Story Time details.
6. Pizza Night at Breeden's Orchard, Thursday Aug. 20
Fresh-made pizza on the farm from 4:30 to 8 p.m., billed plainly as good fun for all ages. An easy answer for a Thursday when nobody at home wants to cook. Pizza Night details.
7. Conductor Keith's Train Feature at Hibbett Hall, Saturday Aug. 22
Two to four in the afternoon at the city's train and history museum. Keith answers train questions from anyone willing to ask them, and the HO-scale layout does the rest. Free, indoors, and short enough to slot in before or after the fair. Event details.
8. Ava's Splash Pad & Planet Playground — free, this weekend
At Charlie Daniels Park, and the season is running short. The city's posted weekend schedule is Saturdays 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sundays 1 to 5 p.m. Planet Playground sits right beside it, so the kid who is done with water has somewhere to go. Free. The city posts closure notices, so glance at those before you drive over.
9. Fiddlers Grove Historic Village, Lebanon — during fair week
A walk-through village of one-room log cabins and period buildings on the fairgrounds themselves, which makes this week the easy time to see it — you are already there. Shaded lanes, and a much quieter twenty minutes than the midway.
10. Mt. Juliet Welcome Center & Corley & Son General Store Museum — free, any day
A single room of what a Mt. Juliet general store actually held, drawn from more than fifty years of collecting by longtime resident Fred Corley. Free, indoors, and about fifteen minutes — exactly the right length when the afternoon needs a reset and nobody has the energy for a real outing.
