Three Matches in Four Days, and the Last One Is Across Town
The gym at Mt. Juliet High School has that particular August quality right now — floors resealed, nets not yet up for real, the sound of a ball on hardwood carrying farther than it will once there are bodies in the bleachers. That ends Monday.
The Golden Bears open their volleyball season with three matches in four days, and the schedule is arranged almost perfectly: two at home to settle in, then a short drive that carries more weight than the mileage suggests.
The week
Monday, August 17 — Oakland, 6:30 p.m., home. An opener against a Rutherford County program is a real measuring stick rather than a soft landing. Worth showing up for on the first night.
Tuesday, August 18 — Hendersonville, 6:00 p.m., home. A quick turnaround on back-to-back nights, which in the opening week is as much a test of a roster's depth as of its starting six. Early-season doubles are where coaches find out who they actually have.
Thursday, August 20 — at Green Hill, 6:00 p.m. This is the one.
Why the Thursday match matters more than the drive
Green Hill High School opened in the fall of 2020 — the largest public project in Wilson County history — and it did what every new high school does in a growing county: it drew its student body substantially from the zone that had been feeding Mt. Juliet High.
That is the origin of a rivalry that did not exist seven years ago and now needs no explanation to anyone in town. The Hawks and the Golden Bears are not separated by geography or by history in the way old rivals usually are. They are separated by a rezoning map. Players on opposite benches came up through the same youth programs, the same middle schools, the same club teams. Some of them were teammates a few years ago.
Rivalries built that way tend to be sharper, not softer. There is no travel required to reach the away gym and no ambiguity about who anyone is.
Going
High school volleyball is one of the genuinely great deals in Wilson County: admission is a few dollars, the matches move fast, and a competitive five-set night in a packed high school gym generates an atmosphere that costs a great deal more to buy anywhere else.
The two Monday and Tuesday matches are at Mt. Juliet High. Thursday is at Green Hill. If you only make one, make it Thursday — but the Monday opener against Oakland will tell you more about what kind of season this is going to be.
Can't make it in person? A number of Mt. Juliet matches stream through the NFHS Network, including earlier Golden Bears volleyball broadcasts, which is a reasonable fallback for a Tuesday night when the back-to-back schedule catches up with the rest of us too.
